Sunset at Portsmouth Naval Hospital

Years ago, I used to work at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.  I commuted to Portsmouth each day through the horrible downtown tunnel.  Our actual office was right off the Elizabeth River shoreline, but we spent most days roaming the halls of the Naval Hospital, managing the contract employees.  It was a wonderful job, full of fun co workers, good work, and beautiful views.  My one regret from my time there is that I didn't walk through the area with my camera.  I was young and new to photography.  I lacked confidence on going out shooting alone.  I was afraid of the terrible things you hear about Portsmouth.  But, it was a wonderful area to work in.  I never felt unsafe.  And I always enjoyed the spectacular Elizabeth River views.

On this particular evening, I was wrapping up a senior portrait session.  We both were so mesmerized by the beautiful sunset, that we stopped to watch.  She pulled out her iPhone and I quietly snapped a few images with my camera.  Sometimes beautiful things just stop you in your tracks.
