Winter in Winthrop, My New Favorite Thing to Do
2020 was a year that brought us outside even more than normal. With winter looming, we knew we’d need a way to pass the time, so we booked a shopping appointment at REI and went in search of cross country skis. We had tried classic skiing once or twice and had enjoyed it, so when we heard many rental shops would either stay closed or have limited supply, we knew we’d need to get our own gear. What we didn’t expect was that the world would be sold out. We were able to find a couple pairs of cross country skate skis and set out to learn another new sport.
As it turns out, Washington is home to the nation’s largest cross country ski area. Methow Trails maintains 120 miles of groomed trails in the breathtaking North Cascades. You had me at… hello. We booked a long weekend in a cabin for New Years, prepped all of our meals, and packed all the warm things.
While I expected we’d enjoy the trip, I never imagined we’d absolutely fall in love with the area. We stayed at the beautiful Sun Mountain Lodge, just above the charming town of Winthrop. I took a few days of ski lessons while Forrest taught himself and we then explored the snowy trails together. In addition to the spectacular beauty of the snow covered mountains, it seemed everywhere we looked we spotted a Bald Eagle.
I can’t wait until we can return to this beautiful winter wonderland next year. This also would make a fantastic location for a winter photography retreat…..
