Forth of July Fireworks at the Avon Pier

If I had to guess, I'd say it had been about 15 years since we'd gone to see fireworks.  You can imagine how excited I was to not only see a firework display, but to photograph it as well.  After dinner we settled in on the beach in Hatteras, about a mile north of the Avon Pier.  The beach was loaded with groups of people, grilling out, having bonfires, and generally enjoying the night.  Despite the heavy winds blowing the smoke and obscuring the view from time to time, the display was incredible.  I'd venture to say the best I've ever seen.

I took hundreds of photographs, hoping to find just one that I liked.  When I got them on the computer, I realized that I had left the camera on auto white balance so each image was shot with a varying temperature.  But, the effect was incredible.  For the most part, the images are straight out of the camera, with just a few adjustments to the raw file.    Thankfully, with the Sony a9, if you nail your settings in camera, you really don't need to do much editing work.
