Adventure in the Alps 2016 Part 3: Rain, Rest, and Betadine in Saas Fee

After our climb on the Eiger-Rotstock Via Ferrata, we took a series of trains and buses to the adorable town of Saas Fee.  The rain moved in and we hunkered down for the night to watch the forecast.  Our next climb would involve a via ferrata which wasn't possible in bad weather, so knew we might have to wait things out.

We spent our first night in Saas Fee at the Wellness Hostel, a nice, new facility.  Our private room was moderate and a simple breakfast was included.  They had a nice steam room and whirlpool which allowed us to soak our sore muscles.  Despite months of training in my trusty, broken in boots, my feet had taken quite a beating on our first day's hike up Schwarzhorn.  After a night of rest we awoke to a less than optimistic weather forecast for the morning.  Combined with my battered feet, we decided to spend another night is Saas Fee, exploring the area and enjoying the town before heading back up into the mountains.  The rest day allowed us to catch up on laundry, FaceTime with family, and when the sun finally appeared in the afternoon we explored the town.

We moved over to the fantastic Dom Hotel, which cost less than the hostel and included our dinner.  The Dom was phenomenal.  The rooms were beautiful and comfortable and the staff was perfectly accommodating.  We enjoyed our stay so much that we decided to leave some of our stuff behind and return to the Dom after our next night in the mountains.

Forrest went out in search of something to treat the open blisters on my feet while I indulged in the comfort of our room.  When he returned with betadine and gauze, we did the best we could to cover the sores.  But, the blisters were crippling and despite the change in weather, we opted to do a shorter hike to our next destination rather than putting additional stress of the via ferrata climb on my sensitive toes.

We had an amazing dinner at the Dom of hazelnut gorgonzola ravioli!  I think I would eat that every day if I could!  Some of our favorite meals came from the Dom kitchen.

Our next stop will take us to the best mountain hut we've visited, come back tomorrow to see the photographs and read the stories!  In case you missed our first two stops, be sure to check out our midnight photo shoot and hike to Schwarhorn and the via ferrata on Eiger.
