A Trip to Playa Grande, Costa Rica
Last month, we took a surf trip to Playa Grande, Costa Rica. We were celebrating the graduation and appointment to the USNA of a close family friend by spending a week in paradise based solely around the tide schedule and wave height. Playa Grande is known for its consistent waves, warm waters, and calm conditions and lived up to its reputation.
Friends of ours own Frijoles Locos, an awesome surf shop that also offers accommodations. We stayed in the apartment above the shop, just a short walk from the beaches of Playa Grande. The apartment was the perfect home away from home- 2 bedrooms with 2 baths, a full kitchen, and a great patio overlooking the pool. We were able to rent surf boards and book lessons through the surf shop below.
Most days looked similar - early morning surf, big breakfast, resting by the pool or exploring a local spot, lunch, reading, afternoon surfing, mojitos, and a seafood dinner. It was the epitome of relaxing and a dream vacation.
The beach was wide and curved, a protected national park that serves as a nesting spot for the leatherback sea turtle. Sadly, it was the off season for spotting turtles and the end of the very long and hot dry season. On our walks through town, I managed to find a few flowers and a group of howler monkeys high in the trees along with some unique birds and a few iguanas.
We visited nearby Tamarindo for shopping, strolling, and fish tacos. We snorkeled off the shores of Playa Flamingo on a sunset boat cruise. And we visited the cute Italian style town of Las Catalinas.
I soaked up the moments and memories with my people, enjoyed being present, and read 4 books. It couldn’t have been a better week ❤️
